2019 – When 58.8% Of Earth Used the Internet

2019 was the year when 58.8% of Earth’s population used the internet. That amounts to around 4.39 billion internet users, a substantial increase from the previous year and more than half the population.

The field of technology in 2019 was full of inventions and designs. It is safe to say that we are growing more and more dependent on technology with each passing year. Whether for social purposes, entertainment, financial aid, medicine, etc., we have grown used to having tools that technology has brought forward.

Especially now, with more than half of the population being connected to the internet, companies and individuals alike are working hard toward introducing the new best thing, the breakthrough in a specific field, or improving something that already exists.

Advancements of the Technology in 2019

So, with said above in mind, let’s see what we came up with in the field of technology in 2019 and discover what new or just improved advancements were created.

Hologram Meetings

When it comes to technology in 2019, there is no more need for going to meetings. Well, at least not physically anyway. 2019 has made a lot of businesspeople thrilled with the technology it brought them.

Namely, thanks to a specific mix of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, the new 5G Wireless tech, advanced sensors, and many more components, it is now possible for businesses to conduct meetings without being in the same place. These so-called hologram meetings enable business partners to shake hands even if they are in different countries, even different continents.

Also, doctors and other medical practitioners can examine and work with their patients as if they are in the same room, even if they are in fact across the country

Robots Become Even More Advanced

People need not fear, for robots are still clumsy and inept, which means they will not take their jobs. Although robots do an excellent job when it comes to picking up components from an assembly line without getting tired, if you move that component one centimeter to the left, they will get confused and will not know what to do.

However, while people haven’t yet figured out a way to program robots to handle objects by just looking at them, robots can now learn how to do it on their own through virtual trial and error.

Dactyl was one of the first robots that taught itself to flip a toy building block in its fingers. Dactyl is a robot made by OpenAI, a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco.

Dactyl was able to teach itself how to grasp the block by using reinforcement learning, and the neural-network software that is built-in into Dactyl first learns how to hold the block virtually, and after it has learned, it tries it out for real.

The experts at OpenAI managed to achieve this breakthrough in robotics by adding randomness to the virtual training, which gives robots some sense of how unpredictable human reality can be.

Release Of The Samsung Galaxy Fold

Speaking of technology in 2019, Samsung released the Samsung Galaxy Fold, one of the first foldable smartphones. The phone has a design like a booklet, where the folded, larger screen is located on the inside, a screen on its cover allows the user to interact with the phone without opening it. When unfolded, the 4.6-inch “cover” display expanded to 7.3 inches. The starting price phone of this Android smartphone was $1,980.

Ban Of Huawei

When it comes to technology in 2019, due to political tension with China, Huawei is banned from doing business with the US. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 contained a provision that banned ZTE and Huawei equipment from being used by the US federal government, due to security concerns. This leads to Google no longer supporting Android on Huawei smartphones.

Other Honorable Mentions

Of course, now we move on to the list of inventions that should not be omitted when discussing the technology advancements of technology in 2019.

  • Before, it took people days or longer to track where contaminated food originates from. However, technology in 2019 has enabled people to do so in a matter of minutes. This is possible with blockchain technology that allows users to track every step that food passes through via the supply chain.
  • Google uses Google Wing, a drone-based delivery in certain areas. Wing was a service developed in 2014 owned by Google which used drones to deliver packages. In 201, Wing began operation in select locations in Australia and Virginia.
  • Apple announced iPadOS in the field of technology in 2019, an operating system by Apple for their tablet devices. Previously, iPads had the same operating system as the iPhone, the iOS.
  • Google+, a social network by Google, was shut down in 2019 due to the fact that it turned into a security liability for Google and it had low usage.

Conclusion

2019 was an excellent year for medicine and environmentally-friendly inventions. And as we can see from previous years, scientists have been putting extra effort into discovering, improving, and finding new drugs, treatments, and potential cures for diseases in recent years.

Also, people have been focusing on trying to save their Earth and hopefully prolong its lifespan. Scientists have been developing many technologies and inventions that reduce the harm done to their planet and have been trying to find more eco-friendly solutions to old problems.

So, it is good to see technology in 2019 being put to a more substantial use, rather than solely serving as a source of developments and improvements in the fields of entertainment and social media.
